Kalapana Lava Hike
This tour has been placed on hold until the night-time lava viewing conditions improve in the Kalapana area. We are instead conducting "Volcano Twilight" tours for after-dark viewing inside Halemau'mau crater. Visit the Volcano Twilight page for more details.
This five hour tour is done mostly by SUV, with frequent stops at attractions and scenic locations in the district of Puna (the eastern rift zone of Kilauea Volcano). This tour does include an easy, 10-15 minute hike out across an old lava field to the lava viewing area.
The first portion of this excursion includes a drive through 3 miles of macadamia nut orchards, and then a stop at the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut farm. The tour then continues on to view lava trees and fissures located at the Lava Tree State park in the Nanawale Rainforest. After a short stroll through this rainforest you will continue on to a scenic drive down the famous Kalapana Red Road, wind along Mango Grove Drive and then stop at a scenic sea-cliff lookout where a picnic-style dinner and refreshments are provided. After this short rest-stop, you will reach our destination and enter the current lava fields of Kalapana just before sunset. A short, easy walk out over the old lava flows will take you to the lava viewing area where you may see lava flowing in the dark.
The lava flow is constantly changing and moving. At times the lava viewing area is only a few feet from the molten magma rivers and you may get to watch it flow into the sea and form new land before your eyes! At other times it is up high on the pali, (cliff) and you can see the red glow in the distance. (You may call or email our offices anytime for a current lava condition update.)
A universal tripod is set up for taking lava pictures with your camera, a telescope for lava viewing and chairs for sitting out on the lava. Tours includes light snacks and beverages. The terrain is uneven so please wear closed-toe shoes such as sneakers.
