Surfing Lessons

Kona Mike’s Surf Adventures Lessons and Activities offers group, semi-private or all private surfing lessons on regular long boards or standup paddle boards. Kona Mike’s also offers Hawaiian Cultural Activities such as Coconut Fron Weaving classes and guided Hawaiian Petroglyph viewing tours. Learn to surf with the best instructors in Big Island Hawaii. All instructors are CPR, First Aid and lifeguard certified as well as trained in professional rescue.

You and your family will be well taken care of! Surfing is a way of life and in Hawaii, it's something you can't live without. You've worked hard for your Big Island vacation and deserve to experience the adventure of a lifetime. Come learn to surf the safe and easy way with the Kona Mike's surf team! We use all safe and user friendly equipment! Free rashy and foot protection included for use with every lesson. We surf Hawaii's Big Island seven days a week, conditions allowing.

What should I wear?
• Wear a swimsuit under your resort wear
• Comfortable and easy to remove footwear

What do I need to bring?
• Sunscreen (Kona Mike recommends SPF 30 or higher)
• A towel
• A spirit of adventure

What will Kona Mike's provide?
• Rash guard
• Booties
• Surf board and leash
• Drinking water
• Snacks

What time do I need to be at the surf shack?
Prior to the start of the lesson we will conduct a mandatory safety briefing that will last approximately 45 minutes. 
• For 9am lessons, please be at the surf shack no later than 8:15am.
• For noon lessons, please be at the surf shack no later than 11:30am.

How long does the lesson last?
We will spend up to two hours in the water, due to, but not limited to, the timely arrival of guests.

What if I get tired during the lesson?
You will be given an option to hang at the safety buoy and rest until you're ready to charge it again, or conclude your lesson, in which case an instructor will escort you back to the beach.

What if the waves are too big?
Kona Mike's has several surf spots for lessons. The best spot will be chosen based on that day's ocean conditions. If waves are epic (too big and not safe even for Kona Mike) classes will be rescheduled.

Will we see sharks?
Not if they see you first!

Kona Mike's Surf Adventures is located in Hawaii's Kona town and within minutes of the best surf location. A 30 minute safety briefing/Talk Story will be conducted before each lesson in our surf shack, so you are up to date and informed of the latest conditions and safety concerns to ensure a radical surf adventure!
